The power of positive thinking … is it real? Does the power of positive thinking work? I think the answer is yes, but not in the way most of us have been taught to think about it. In most instances, the power of positive thinking means being inauthentic; it means thinking positively about the things and/or people in our lives that we are already not thinking positively about!
As explained in the book A Life Worth Living, the question isn’t whether you think positively. The question is what do you think positively about. When you access the power of positive thinking, what’s relevant is really where your attention is focused. If you hate your boss, then you hate your boss. If you don’t think you have enough money, then you don’t think you have enough money. Thinking that you have more money than you have is delusional. It is what it is! Why do we have to make it something it’s not by thinking positively about it?
Still, that it “is what it is” doesn’t have anything to do with creating what you want for the future. And so the key is how you think about the future. Surely that statement will provoke images of people sitting around visualizing or chanting what they want and then waiting for some fairy to drop it on their doorstep. It’s not that either.
There’s a way that we think about the future that allows for us to achieve the things we want in life. If you look in your life you’ve likely accomplished many things already. Just look around at your life, I’m sure it’s full. It might not be perfect, but you have things and people in your life.
How did they get there?
You thought in a particular way, which led you to act in a particular way, which led you to having the things you wanted in your life.
Period.
You didn’t think negatively about the things to create them in your life nor did you access some magical, mystical forced called “the power of positive thinking.” This book is not about the power of positive thinking as we typically thing about it, but it is about thinking in a particular way to create what you want in your life.
